Senior Finite Element Analysis Engineer

What You Will Do:

·       Be part of a small, vibrant team with diverse backgrounds, working on high visibility, technically challenging modeling problems ranging from structure and thermal to stochastic analysis. Utilize different numerical techniques to solve high impact business critical problems.  

·       With strong microelectronic packaging experience, the candidate will be responsible for developing numerical analysis techniques to evaluate advanced packaging solutions (3D Packaging, System-in-Package, Ball Grid Array, Flip Chip BGA, Silicon Photonics etc.). 

·       Evaluate package design parameters and develop failure mode specific models to optimize package design for warpage, component and board level assembly and reliability. This includes solder joint reliability predictions under thermal cycling loading, bend and shock loading conditions.  

·       Evaluate novel thermal solutions to enable new products and enhance product performance. This includes developing experimentally calibrated thermal models for component, board and system level thermal cooling; understanding the impact of thermal solutions on product reliability; and developing new solutions for data center cooling. 

·       Assist with rapid resolution of production linestop related issues by quickly developing numerical models to identify areas of focus and failure mode trends for effective and timely resolution of production issues. 

·       Develop new applications for designing products by utilizing new technologies (Big Data, Predictive Analytics, Statistical Analysis Tools and Real Time Apps).  

·       Drive partnerships with industry consortia, universities, partners and suppliers to formulate advanced modeling methodologies for structural, thermal, fluid and coupled numerical analysis. 

·       Develop innovative solutions that can help take Cisco to the next level in the development of solutions for Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related industry applications.

The Technology and Quality Organization in Supply Chain Operations is a key hub of technical innovation in Cisco. Members of the organization have a broad scope of influence: interacting with Business Units, Product Operations, Manufacturing Operations, Planning and Fulfillment, Supplier Management and directly with Suppliers. In addition, members of the organization participate in industry consortia, conferences and collaborate with academia and other strategic partners. The organization focuses on evaluating and adopting new technologies to help Cisco leapfrog the competition in advanced algorithms and solutions to solve complex problems.


Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

·       Typically requires MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related field 

·       2 – 5 years relevant experience in Finite Element Modeling and Microelectronics Packaging 

Preferred Qualifications:  

·       Strong fundamental background in versatile numerical modeling (non-linear structural, thermal, electrical and coupled) and statistical analysis. 

·       Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of microelectronic packaging design, assembly, materials and failure modes. 

·       Hands on experience with experimental material property characterization (linear elastic, viscoplastic and viscoelastic etc.), reliability testing (thermal cycling, mechanical shock/vibration etc.) desired.  

·       Demonstrated experience with structural analysis software (ANSYS Mechanical, Multiphysics, LS-DYNA, Abaqus etc.) Experience with computational fluid dynamics a plus (FLUENT, FLOTHERM). Demonstrated experience with JMP, Python, R and ModeFrontier is a plus.  

·       Strong problem-framing, problem-solving and project management skills, with the ability to communicate insights and "so what's" to highly technical management teams. 

·       Strong customer focus and team collaboration skills. 

·       Demonstrated ability to manage and influence engineering projects through all stages of new technology / product development and manufacturing. 

·       Ability to lead by influence without direct reporting chain and advise executive decision makers 

·       Self-starter, proven ability to work independently on multiple projects and priorities  

·       Ability to think quickly, respond to changing demands, anticipate future problems, and recommend preventative courses of action 

·       Excellent communication, project management and metrics design skills 

·       Ability to create presentations for diverse audiences and varying executive levels to support agile decision-making
