Runtime System Software Engineer (m/f)

Job Description

As the leading supplier of data center platforms, Intel collaborates with world class partners to prototype advanced solutions platform, system SW and APIs for large-scale high-performance computing HPC and High Performance Data Analytics HPDA usage scenarios. The ExaCluster Laboratory is a collaboration of Intel with the Juelich Supercomputer Center JSC established in 2010.

Activities in this lab include European government-funded R&D projects DEEP-EST and NEXTGenIO and tight collaborations with supercomputer centers at Barcelona and Edinburgh. The job offered encompasses the design and implementation/extension of runtime software layers responsible for resource management, orchestration and scheduling for the DEEP-EST R&D project. Work will be based on the Open Source SLURM system, and the objective is to support a novel, modular system architecture for HPC and HPDA data centers that is being developed in the project, and a mix of highly parallel and potentially heterogeneous workloads. The candidate accepted will work full-time for the DEEP-EST project as part of the Intel project team. The employment contract is aligned with the term of the DEEP-EST project and will therefore run for the duration of 3 years. Possible locations for the position include an office at JSC in Juelich, Germany, or Intel's sites in Munich.

  • The candidate must have a good understanding of the Linux OS architecture and implementation, possess professional experience in developing or maintaining runtime system software components for resource management, orchestration or scheduling.
  • Knowledge of the Open Source SLURM resource management system would be ideal. Good programming skills in C and C++ are essential, and knowledge of scripting languages like Perl or Python is very helpful.
  • Prior experience in the high performance computing HPC or high-performance data analytics HPDA fields is advantageous, as is knowledge about the programming models used in these fields MPI, OpenMP, Hadoop/Spark, machine learning frameworks.
  • He/she will work on behalf of Intel in an Europe-wide collaborative project.
  • This entails regular travel activities and requires good communication and team skills. Good command of the English language and people skills are essential, as coordination with partners is an important part of the job.
  • The candidate should have an academic degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields.
  •  Experience of working in software development teams in an industrial or academic context, or in collaborative R&D projects in the European Framework 7 or Horizon 2020 programs is a big advantage.
