Date: Aug 4, 2017 Location: Ealing, EAL, GB Company: Ericsson Operational Listings Writer Job Purpose Ericsson Broadcast & Media Services (EBMS) Metadata handles programme schedules for BBC TV and radio channels and a host of commercial channels. Listings writers enter timings, synopses and metadata into a bespoke database which supplies programme information to print and electronic media including national newspapers and magazines, electronic programme guides (EPGs), BBC iPlayer, video on demand (VOD) services and a variety of websites, driving multimedia content as well as providing listings. First-class sub-editing skills, attention to detail and technical competency are a requirement. We are looking for listings writers to work in our Operations team. The Operational Listings Writer role combines office-based work with a monitoring role based in EBMS' BBC network channels playout suite in the Broadcast Centre in White City. Here the role entails monitoring the EPG guide for factual and linguistic accuracy and correct behaviour at programme junctions; monitoring schedule deliveries to platforms such as Freeview, Freesat and Sky; keeping abreast of live programmes and reacting effectively to breaking events in liaison with the playout editor; updating schedules rapidly when broadcasters make late changes; and responding to queries from staff and clients. Monitoring is carried out every day of the year in a shift pattern covering the usual hours of 0630-2400. The UK Editorial team works office hours with some out-of-hours work required on an ad hoc basis. Reporting Lines and Key Relationships • Carry out duties meticulously, where appropriate writing detailed handovers to colleagues at the end of each shift. • Liaise with the production manager and other team members to ensure the smooth flow of information. • Communicate progress to the production manager and manage workload effectively to ensure that cover is possible in the case of absences. • Be the representative of EBMS Metadata in Playout 1, liaising with playout staff, the EBMS planning unit and BBC schedulers to ensure that EPG information and print listings are accurate and up to date. • Monitor gaps in schedules to ensure that complete listings are received by clients and customers alike. • Be aware of and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) as laid down in service level agreements (SLAs) agreed between EBMS and its clients, and how they define the relationship with the client. • Log and progress issues in co-operation with colleagues in other areas of the company such as IT Support; Media iPlayer team; Metadata extracts team; Metadata development team. • Liaise effectively with broadcasters and handle incoming queries from listings publications, national and local newspapers, other listings agencies, online guides and EPG platforms politely and efficiently. Key Accountabilities • Source programme information from broadcasting production offices and scheduling departments, independent production offices, agencies or websites to write synopses and add associated metadata. • Evaluate and where necessary check programme information by referring to the broadcaster or authoritative alternative sources to ensure that all information received is comprehensible and accurate. • Ensure the collation and distribution of all billings are handled quickly and efficiently where applicable. • Enter broadcasters’ schedules and programme information onto a database according to set parameters, including ensuring that programme information accords with house style, editorial guidelines and, where appropriate, with client-specific requirements. • Ensure all late changes are promptly entered into the database and notify customers of updates. • Assume responsibility for colleagues' work in their absence. • Handle series linking, electronic importation of schedules and the management of additional metadata which supports various client projects such as BBC iPlayer, Green Button, programme highlights, recommendations and video on demand (VOD) services. • Work ahead of deadline whenever possible for maximum flexibility. • Pay due attention to detail and accuracy, for example, in reading through billings and metadata for completed channels during the QA process. • Be able to keep up with new projects and developments in technology and assimilate new working practices easily, including involvement in user-testing developments on the database. • Taking on additional duties with enthusiasm as the team evolves to meet the changing requirements of the clients, developing relevant specialist knowledge accordingly. Person Specification Experience and Knowledge • First-class sub-editing skills, including excellent spelling and attention to detail. • In-depth knowledge of TV and radio, including on-demand services and the future media landscape. • Broad general knowledge. • A typing speed of at least 40wpm. • IT literacy, including the ability to master the EBMS Metadata EPG scheduling database and an understanding of the significance of listings metadata and its accuracy.
