IOT and Cities Solutions Architect

What You'll Do : 

The IoT and Cities Solutions Architect – APJC will work with large industrial customers in addition to large public sector and community estate planners, including utilities, manufacturing, transport, oil/gas and mining on Cisco’s Internet of Things and Cities portfolio of solutions offerings.

The role requires a dynamic individual who is conformable operating in a cross functional role, where your experiences and skills across multiple technological domains, will be required. 

The individual will ideally have a deep understanding of customers that operate industrial based application solutions, such as SCADA. Typically these solutions are presently operated over legacy based communication solutions, such as UHF radio, serial, PDH/SDH etc in industries such as utilities, transportation, manufacturing, mining, oil/gas etc. 

Supporting the evolution of Cisco’s industrial customers towards an IP enabled infrastructure requires a disciplined approach to understanding the use cases and business requirements of the customer and how to translate these into solutions that will operate the Internet of Things.

As Cisco continues to lead the world smartest cities on their digitization journey, the individual will be expected to help Cisco’s customer plan their ICT architectures and infrastructures, to ensure that a scalable platform for providing citizens with innovative digital service offerings that are scalable 

You will be expected to be able to support Cisco’s Business Development initiatives through activities including, but not limited to solution cost/effort estimations, RFP responses, pre-sales meetings etc. Additionally, working with a global team of architects, you will be expected to collaborate and contribute to the development of the practice with other IOT architects and engineers located right around the world. Participating and contributing to industry forums, research journals, white papers etc will be an ongoing part of the role.

The role will require travel across the Asia Pacific, Japan and China (APJC) theatre of Cisco’s operations. Travel is estimated at approximately 30% of the time, driven largely by the customer's requirements. Whilst not travelling, working from home with flexible hours of work in line with Cisco’s policies is actively encouraged to assist with maintaining a healthy work/life/family balance. Residential location can be in any major city of Australia where access to an international airport is available.

It is expected that the Solutions Architect will be delivering outcomes for Cisco’s Advanced Services engagements for IoE and Smart City solutions, with responsibilities including, but not limited to the following:

Pre-Sales based Proposal Development and Consulting.

RFP Development/Response Process Experience

Project Delivery Effort/Cost Estimation

Strong CxO level Presentation Skills

Strong Written skills (Expected to be developing and delivering Consulting Reports on paid delivery engagements)

Background of working within large industrial enterprises or government/government owned entities (e.g. Utilities)

Experience leading diverse skilled multi-discipline technical delivery teams, across organizations in delivering solutions that drive business and/or city outcomes.

Experience leading customer workshops

Experience with use case development

Experience with customer requirements specifications

Experience working with multiple cultures ideally in a regional role capacity

Experience with a wide range of technologies both at the infrastructure and application layer

Ideally having come from a consulting or enterprise architecture background

The Solutions Architect will have experience in numerous areas from the outlined list below. They will have the opportunity to grow their own personal skills to encompass the wider level of expertise:

At least 10 to 15 years of experience working with or within larger industrial customer or cities and/or proven record of accomplishment of creating significant impact in multinational organizations.

Strong systems engineering and design background with 10-15 years’ experience in building large, complex computer systems including experience with route/switching, wireless and security system based infrastructures.

Experience with Public / Government Departments, and knowledge of urban planning practices, new estate development, the planning and construction cycle, in addition to other sectors like Retail, Hospitality, Sports Venues, Hospitals and other smart building, precinct, districts, universities and cities.

Designs, models, and documents high level complex systems involving the interplay of numerous interrelated components of a Smart City to achieve its business objective while managing the challenges and the risks.

Possesses in-depth knowledge and experience with concepts, architectures, and deployments. 

Represent Cisco for industry panel discussions and present training for customers at technical conferences.

Influence technology directions and decisions with Cisco business units. Work closely with other Cisco business units in bringing new technology information to the AS group and customers.


Good background in dealing with complex environments and should have worked in well-known organizations with significant reference projects.

Good Understanding and Exposure in IT companies will be a definite plus.

Should be willing to travel to Cisco offices and customers located primarily within the APJC theatre, but also to the Americas and EMEAR theatres as required by the business

Good interpersonal skills; a person who listens well, respects diversity of opinions and has an open, clear and succinct communication style.

Effective organizational and time management skills in handling multiple projects, performing a variety of tasks, and meeting required deadlines.

Able to interpret basic multi-disciplinary drawings, basic plan and profile drawings.

Minimum Qualifications

Degree educated, preferably with an Engineering or Computer Science (BEng, BSc) undergraduate degree

Post graduate qualifications either in Engineering, Computer Science or a business discipline (e.g. MBA) – desirable

CCIE (R&S, Wireless, Security or SP) or equivalent of 10 years + technical experience in large scale enterprise of service provider networks

Exposure to a wide range of IT Systems and Infrastructure environments

Experience and strong knowledge of enterprise architecture, data modelling, software architectures, network and infrastructure solution architectures

Experience with Microsoft Windows Server (AD, DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, PKI)

Experience in operating with a Unix/Linux environment, with a preference towards RHEL

Very strong design and documentation skills, with the ability to work from a blank sheet of paper

A very strong customer presence with strong communications skills

Experience working in consulting or directly for end customers is highly desirable

Approximately 30% travel across the APJC theatre, mostly to customer sites as required
