HPC and Data Analytics SW Engineer (f/m)

Job Description

As the leading supplier of data center platforms, Intel collaborates with world class partners to prototype advanced solutions platform, system SW and APIs for large-scale high-performance computing HPC and High Performance Data Analytics HPDA usage scenarios. The ExaCluster Laboratory is a collaboration of Intel with the Juelich Supercomputer Center JSC established in 2010. Activities in this lab include European government-funded R&D projects DEEP-EST and NEXTGenIO and tight collaborations with supercomputer centers at Barcelona and Edinburgh.

The job offered encompasses the characterization of data analytics and simulation applications, the collaboration with systems architects in a co-design setting, and finally the adaptation of said workloads to best match the characteristics of the DEEP-EST modular system. In the latter topic, areas of work will include the modernization of code to take best advantage of Intel's platforms CPUs, FPGAs, data analytics and HPC Clusters, and the partitioning of workloads into modules with different system requirements.

The candidate accepted will work full-time for the DEEP-EST project as part of the Intel project team. The employment contract is aligned with the term of the DEEP-EST project and will therefore run for the duration of 3 years. The multi-disciplinary nature of the DEEP-EST project will require close collaboration with system and programming model/application experts within Intel and the project partners. Possible locations for the position include an office at JSC in Juelich, Germany, or Intel's sites in Munich.

The candidate must have experience in developing or maintaining highly parallel data analytics or simulation applications. He/she has to have a good understanding of programming models used in the high-performance computing HPC or high-performance data analytics HPDA fields, such as MPI, OpenMP, TBB, Hadoop/Spark, ML frameworks Caffe, Theano, Tensorflow.
The candidate should have good working knowledge of the Intel Xeon or Xeon Phi CPUs and system architecture. Good programming skills in C and C++ are essential, and knowledge of scripting languages like Perl or Python is very helpful. Experience in SW development with FORTRAN is a bonus, but not required. Experience with applications that use FPGAs, such as by way of OpenCL, would be a large advantage.
He/she will work on behalf of Intel in a Europe-wide collaborative project. This entails regular travel activities, and requires good communication and team skills. Good command of the English language and people skills are essential, as coordination with partners is an important part of the job. The candidate should have an academic degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields. Experience of working in software development teams in an industrial or academic context, or in collaborative R&D projects in the European Framework 7 or Horizon 2020 programs is a big advantage.
