Documentation Project Manager

What You'll Do

Manage medium-sized and large-sized documentation projects with moderate to high risk:

  • Serve as a project manager for complex group projects requiring task and project coordination.
  • Regularly lead product/project documentation team meetings.
  • Identify, communicate, plan for, and revise technical writing project requirements.
  • Organize and disseminate source information.
  • Define metrics for project success.
  • Select and apply standards (e.g. delivery process, roles and responsibilities, processes, stylistics).
  • Identify risks to project success and create mitigation plans.
  • Manage and help define project delivery process, scope and costs of complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • Drive completion of the project and mentor other team members.
  • Evaluate project results against success metrics; creates or re-engineers processes and resources to improve productivity and end product.
  • Establish partnerships with stakeholders to build support, secure sponsorship, and ensures alignment for project outcomes, end products and/or solutions.
  • Drive change by identifying impacts of the project, building awareness and support for change within the organization and contributing to development of training.
  • Solve highly complex problems and identify viable and often innovative options, and use analytical skills and judgment to recommend appropriate solutions; solutions often require collaboration among cross-functional teams; there may be multiple inter-dependencies, and the solution could impact many applications.
  • Collaborate daily with individual contributors and managers, both within the technical writing function and with other functional groups in the product team; interact with customers and external and internal partners periodically.
  • Develop, write, and revise technical documents and documentation sets according to established standards and under general supervision. Contribute to special projects. Work with editors and technical resources to improve document quality and usability.

  • Experienced professional using best practices, specialized expertise and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products or service.
  • Strong knowledge of processes and activities needed to identify, define, combine, unify and coordinate the various processes and project management activities, including scope, time, cost, quality, and change management
  • Analytical: Leads others to solve complex problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgment and identify appropriate solutions; strong skills in cost management skills; planning & prioritization, risk identification & management, and time & productivity management
  • Soft: Strong business networking, client management, consulting & partnering, facilitation, conflict management, negotiation, change management, and presentation & demonstration skills; basic coaching skills, excellent leadership/teamwork skills
  • Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services

Excellent writing skills:

  • Ability to identify the moderately complex information needs of a target audience and organize and develop a documentation plan that addresses those needs.
  • A fundamental understanding of the networking field and of technical writing.
  • Ability to serve as a lead writer, providing training and guidance to junior writers.
  • Successful completion of several major writing projects.

Education and Experience Required/Preferred:

  • Typically requires a BA/BS or equivalent experience, and 3-7 years of related experience or a Masters, and 4 years of related experience. 
  • Preferred: Degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or Computer Science and certification in project management
