The Business Entity – NFV Business Unit

Service Provider NFV (Network Function Virtualization) Business Unit is developing a suite of software products that adheres to the ETSI NFV Management and Orchestration standard. The solution is an important part of Cisco's virtualization strategy and enables the powerful 'orchestration engine'.


The Team

The NFV BU Product Engineering team will design, develop, and deploy transformational experiences leveraging Cloud Technologies for the Service Provider market. This group within Cisco tasked with building the solution from the ground up to transform the future of virtual services delivery. We’re taking Service Providers to the cloud.

Role and Responsibility

You'll be part of a dynamic team and be the type of person who has a track record in building and shipping products, comfortable eating your own dog food and wearing many hats in the process of planning, designing and delivering the platforms, tools and services to our customers. This role has the following responsibilities:

• On-call response to escalated monitoring system alarms and trouble tickets

• Review and improve ‘run-books’ to standardize the operation of the systems

• Install, operate and troubleshoot advanced clouds using OpenStack

• Install, operate and troubleshoot hardware systems in data centers to support private clouds

• Provide expert OpenStack advice and support for remote private and hybrid-private clouds

• Automate installation, operation and corrective actions using salt, chef, puppet

• Write and maintain scripts to support operations, development and testing of advanced software

• Subject matter expert in advanced cloud technologies


Minimum Qualifications

• Candidates will typically have 5-10 years of industry experience in a network operations/support role with increasing responsibilities

• Candidates for this position will generally hold a BS in computer science or a related field

• Candidates must possess excellent team and people skills and should be comfortable working in geographically dispersed teams

• Ideal candidates will be able to quickly ramp up on new technologies outside of comfort zone and think at scale

• Candidates must have an expert level of understanding in networking protocols and concepts (TCP/IP, VLANs, CIDR)

• Candidates must have in depth understanding of Linux/Unix command line

• Candidates will have prior experience with version control (Git/GitHub a plus)

• Candidates will have strong experience with automation tools like Salt/Chef/Puppet/Cobbler

• Candidates must be willing to occasionally work weekends and holidays and an after-hours on-call rotation


Desired Qualifications

• Prior experience supporting mission critical 24/7/365 global services and network operations as a Level Three Engineer

• Good at multitasking

• Experience with multiple distributions (Red Hat, Ubuntu, etc), networking (bonding, bridging, iptables, vlans, OVS, etc), virtualization (KVM, libvirt, etc)

• Experience with block, file, and object storage systems such as Cinder, Swift, Ceph, iSCSI, FCoE, SAN, NAS is a plus.

• Strong hands on experience with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, or Bash. Python experience is preferred

• SQL/NoSQL DB administration experience - Mongodb, Casandra, Oracle, CouchDB a plus

• Strong experience with cloud monitoring technologies (such as Sensu)

• Experience with video systems highly desired

• Detail-oriented personality who keeps the big picture in mind
